Day #2 of being unemployed

So I slept in again today...I got up at 10:30. But I am totally blaming it on the stupid snow plow that was clearing the McDonald's parking lot at 1am, 2:30am and 4am. I really didn't sleep well.

Anyway, my kitchen is now spotless. I'm thrilled with how it looks. I am now going to go down and throw in a load of laundry. Then I will come up and exercise. I'm going to spend the rest of the afternoon puttering around until I have to leave for my class.

When I get home tonight, I will make up my grocery list for tomorrow. I'll check the flyer and see what's on sale. I love sales. :)

I got a really nice email from a contact I made while at CORADIX. I had written and delivered a presentation to an out-placement agency that really specializes in Career Coaching. I emailed Craig last week to tell him that I was finished at CORADIX and he emailed me yesterday asking why I had left. So I told him. This was his response:

Thanks for the email and for letting me know what transpired. Sounds like a challenging situation. It is too bad, as I can tell it was a tough decision for you.

I am finding in my coaching work that these work/life balance issues are becoming more prevalent as companies tend to continue to focus on bottom line results, at the expense of the people who drive the engine. It is difficult, especially when quality people such as yourself leave an organization. I can appreciate how you felt that there was not much of a future there. How did they respond to the news? Did they do an exit interview?

Glad to hear you will be taking some time off. That’s a great idea! If there is anything we can do to assist, please let me know. I would be happy to arrange a free consult with one of our Career Coaches if you feel that would be of some value for you........ just to have an independent specialist to bounce ideas around with. Please let me know if this interests you.

I am going to email him back tomorrow and express interest in the consultation. I think it would definitely be worth bouncing some ideas off a third party.

Tomorrow I am going to do something that I have never done before: I am going to a movie by myself. :)

And that's all for Day 2.

Day #1 of being unemployed

I didn't get up until 10:30 this morning. While I don't plan on sleeping that late every day, it was nice this morning. :)

I applied to 2 more jobs today, set up my profile on Monster.com, sent my resume to my friend's husband so he could pass it around his office for me and updated my LinkedIn profile. I also did some more work in my kitchen. All I have left to do is wash the stove and the floor. I also took down some recycling and checked my mail.

I currently have sausages defrosting for dinner. After I've eaten, I will do my dinner dishes and then finish the work in the kitchen.

Tomorrow my plan is to do laundry. I also go back to school tomorrow. My class tomorrow night is PHI1104 - Great Philosophers. Oh joy.

Starting tomorrow I'm going to get myself into a routine: get up by 8:30am, exercise, have breakfast, shower and get dressed. Then I will search the job boards, apply to anything that looks interesting and do more work around my apartment. I don't want to get in the habit of sleeping until noon and staying in my pjs all day.

I also don't plan on staying in the apartment every day. Tomorrow I want to run over the grocery store and try to return a bottle of spice that I bought and discovered I didn't need. On Wednesday, I'll go grocery shopping with my grandma and great aunt. I'm also going to go to a movie (I plan on seeing 3 Idiots). On Thursday, I have plans to go visit a friend of mine and her baby. That night, I'm going out for dinner and to see Avatar with Megan and Ian. On Friday, I'm going to MEC to pick up a couple of travel bags for my mom and I.

I love that feeling of optimism I have right now. I know that I'm not going to be unemployed for long.

Today's plan and list of stuff to get done

I slept in! :) I only got up 15 minutes ago. *lol* It's been quite a while since I've slept in that late. Although, it probably didn't help that I couldn't fall asleep until 2am (we got some snow yesterday and as I was trying to fall asleep, all I could hear was the snow plow in the parking lot next door to me).

Anyway, I'm up now and I've just finished making a list of things I need to get at the grocery store for tonight's dinner. I'm making Lamb Keema in my slow cooker. I'm just going to wash and get dressed and then I'll run over to the grocery store.

When I get home, I'm going to get my ground lamb defrosting and then I'm going to get to work in my kitchen. I need to do some major cleaning and reorganizing. So that's my project for today.

  • dishes
    • wash

    • dry

    • put away

  • clean fridge

  • wash stove

  • wipe and disinfect counters

  • vacuum and wash floor

Better late than never ...

poxylady
Did you keep your New Year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't recall making any last year, but I've got a couple this year. I'll tell you in a bit under 12 months if I kept them or not!

What did you do in 2009 that you never thought you would do?
Can't think of anything ... but I'm sure there was stuff.

How did you earn your keep?
As a workforce planner, but I did change jobs!

Did anyone close to you give birth?
I got a baby nephew :)

Did anyone close to you die?
Family friend, Eric.

What countries did you visit?
New Caledonia and Vanuatu

What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
The ability to put myself first before others ... was only the last couple months of 2009 that I actually started doing that.

What dates from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
30th October. My nephew was born.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Changing jobs.

What was your biggest failure?
Yeah, let's not go there.

Did you suffer illness or injury?
Pneumonia, arthritis in my ankles.

What was the best thing you bought?
I don't know.

Whose behavior merited celebration?
My brother's.

Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
There were a few.

Did you have any encounters with the police?
Only if you count that I know two people who are police officers and I said saw them this year.

Where did most of your money go?
Here, there and everywhere.

What did you get really, really, really excited about?
My nephew, changing jobs.

Compared to this time last year, are you:
(a) happier or sadder? A lot happier.
(b) thinner or fatter? Fatter.
(c) richer or poorer? Poorer.

What do you wish you’d done more of?
Saving money (I think I always answer this?)

What do you wish you’d done less of?
Spending money (I think I always answer with this too!)

What pop culture event will you remember 2009 for?
Michael Jackson.

How did you spend Christmas?
With family

Did you fall in love in 2009?
No.

What was your favorite TV program?
House, Lie To Me, Mercy and Glee.

Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Yes.

What was the best book you read?
I can't even remember what I've read this year!

What was your greatest musical discovery?
Glee.

What did you want and get?
A new job.

What did you want and not get?
A resolution.

What was your favorite film of this year?
The Hangover.

What was your favourite night out?
Full Moon Hotel with girls from work.

What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 31 and I went to the pub with a whole heap of friends and co-workers.

How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
Same same.

What kept you sane?
A few things ... I am a lot stronger than I was last year, but I also think The Favourites helped a lot.

What political issue stirred you the most?
It's not an issue per se, but the inauguration of Barack Obama ... I don't know why!

What do you hope the next decade will bring?
More change and a whole lot of fun.

Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
"You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you might find
You get what you need"
Rolling Stones - You Can't Always Get What You Want

New Chapters?

I am officially no longer an employee of CORADIX. I am done. I am taking next week off completely, to get my apartment in order and start finding stuff to get rid of and/or sell.

Last night I posted my resume on Workopolis and applied to three jobs. I already got a bite on my resume this morning. However, the position is purely sales and commission based. So I'm not going to follow through on it. I need a base salary...not a commission.

I am excited. :)

My New Year's Eve plans are very low key. I am going to Megan and Ian's place and we will play Mario Party on the Wii, for shots. *lol* We will probably all be quite drunk, quite quickly.

Final Grade #1

I have the final grade for my music course: 98.56% I got my A+ :) And now I continue waiting for my final grade in Philosophy.

In other news, I have 11.5 hours left at my job. :) I am so excited. I have a short list of 6 jobs that I'm going to apply to tomorrow. As well, I still plan on dropping my resume off at Metro (grocery store) and Rainbow Foods (health food store).

  1. Part-time Donor Services Representative with the Canadian Blood Services

  2. Part-time Data Entry Clerk with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons

  3. Receptionist

  4. 5 month contract for a Procurement Officer in a Federal Department (which is exactly the other side of the work I have been doing for the past 4 years)

  5. 7 week contract for a Receptionist position with the Royal College

  6. International Student Advisor with Le Cordon Bleu

I'm sick :( I woke up Monday morning with a really sore throat and a low-grade fever. So I stayed home from work. On Tuesday I didn't feel too bad, so I went to work. Yesterday morning I woke up at 1:30am and my throat was so sore it felt like it was on fire. I ended up sleeping on the couch so I was propped up and I didn't get a tickle in my throat every time I breathed in. I went to work yesterday because there were some people I wanted to say goodbye to (they won't be in next week). I also had my last exam last night at 7pm. However, by about 2pm, my sinuses were so blocked that the left side of my face was starting to look puffy, my throat was on fire again and all I wanted to do was come home, crawl into bed and sleep. However...I had my last exam last night. :( On my way home from the university, I ran into the drugstore and spent $30 on Neo Citran, Sinutab and HydraSense (a sea water solution to help flush out my sinuses). I was in so much pain when I got home.

Luckily I don't have to go to work today (the president decided to close the office today. yay!) so I'm currently on the couch, wrapped in a blanket, typing this, surrounded by kleenex. I'm supposed to go to my mom's today to spend Christmas Eve with everyone, but honestly, as much as I don't want to spend Christmas Eve alone, I think I'd rather stay home and be sick by myself (although, I must admit, I'm secretly hoping that my mom will tell me to come over anyway and she'll take care of me).

As for my exam last night, it went really well. It was the final for that silly music course I had to take. I finished my exam in 25 minutes. Unfortunately, the university has a policy that you can't leave before the first hour is up. The prof was so surprised when I handed in my paper and said I was done. Until she looked at my name and said, "oh...nevermind. You're the student who finished her midterm exam in 15 minutes." *lol* Anyway, I handed in my exam, went to the bathroom and then went back to the exam room to sit for 30 minutes. *lol* I laid back in my seat, closed my eyes and just focused on not snoring.

And now, I have to go wrap presents.
